Tradition holds that Mahalakshmi left Vaikuntha after a quarrel with Vishnu and came to Kolhapur, where she killed the demon Kolhasura, who asked that the place carry his name. On a few days each year the setting sun's rays reach the image, celebrated as the Kiranotsav.

Counted among the Shakti Peethas in Maharashtra's tradition. Parts of the temple date back to the Chalukya period, and it stands in the heart of old Kolhapur.
