Tradition holds that Shiva took the fierce form of Aghora here to destroy the demon Maruthuvasura, and that Budha (Mercury) worshipped Shiva here and was given his place among the grahas.

History

One of the Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tevaram hymns, and the Budha (Mercury) temple of the nine Navagraha temples. The temple has three sacred tanks, and Chola-period bronzes from Thiruvenkadu are held in museum collections.
