Tradition holds that a black stone washed up here after a flood, and bled when a villager touched it with a stick. That night Shani appeared to the village headman in a dream, said the stone was his own form and needed no roof, and so it stands in the open to this day.

History
The village is known for houses traditionally built without doors or locks. Women were allowed onto the shrine's raised platform in 2016, after a ruling by the Bombay High Court.
