Sthala Purana

Tradition holds that King Nala, who lost his kingdom and was separated from Damayanti during years of Shani's affliction, bathed in the tank here and worshipped Shiva as Dharbaranyeswarar. Shani is said to have released him at the temple's gateway, where the Saneeswaran Shrine now stands.

One of the Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva temples praised in the Tevaram hymns, and the Shani temple of the nine Navagraha temples. The Sani Peyarchi festival, held when Saturn moves into a new sign about every two and a half years, draws very large crowds.
