Tradition holds that a devotee who could no longer make the journey to Tirumala was told in a dream that the Lord was close by, and found the image of Balaji in an anthill at Chilkur. Devotees praying for a visa walk around the shrine eleven times, and come back to walk around it 108 times once the visa is granted.

The temple is known for taking no money: it has no hundi and no paid special darshan. It is one of the older temples in the Hyderabad area.
