Tradition holds that Vishnu came to the Seshachalam hills as Srinivasa and married Padmavati, borrowing from Kubera, the god of wealth, to pay for the wedding. The offerings of devotees are said to help the Lord repay that loan.

History
Inscriptions record gifts from the Pallava, Chola and Vijayanagara kings; Krishnadevaraya visited several times in the 16th century. The temple is run by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), is one of the 108 Divya Desams, and is among the most visited places of worship in the world.
