Sthala Purana

Tradition holds that the image of Krishna worshipped here was once worshipped at Dwaraka, and that after Dwaraka sank, Guru, teacher of the gods, and Vayu, the wind god, installed it at this spot, which took both their names. The poet Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri is said to have recovered from illness after composing the Narayaneeyam here.

History

The temple is run by the Guruvayur Devaswom. It was the focus of the Guruvayur Satyagraha of 1931–32, a campaign to open temples to Devotees of all castes.
