Tradition holds that Vishnu pressed the demon Gayasura into the earth with his foot, and that the footprint left in the rock is the one worshipped here. Offering pinda here is believed to bring peace to one's ancestors.

History
The present temple, on the banks of the Phalgu river, was rebuilt in 1787 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Gaya fills with pilgrims performing ancestral rites every Pitru Paksha.
