Tradition holds that Meenakshi was born to the Pandya king of Madurai, ruled the kingdom and set out to conquer the world, and married Shiva, who came to her as Sundareswarar. Their wedding is celebrated every year in the Chithirai festival.

History
The temple was largely rebuilt under the Nayak rulers of Madurai in the 16th and 17th centuries. It has 14 gopurams, the tallest over 50 metres high, and is one of the most visited temples in India.
