Sthala Purana

Tradition holds that the boy-sage Markandeya, fated to die at sixteen, clung to the linga here when Yama came for him, and Shiva burst out of it to strike Yama down and grant the boy life. Devotees come here to pray for long life, and for the rites that mark the sixtieth and eightieth birthdays.

One of the Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tevaram hymns. The Abhirami Anthadhi, a Tamil hymn cycle to the goddess, was composed here by the poet Abhirami Pattar in the 18th century.
