Tradition holds that Vasuki, king of the serpents, took refuge here from Garuda and did penance, and that Subrahmanya gave him protection and stays here with him. Devotees come for rites to lift Sarpa (serpent) dosha.

The temple stands in the Western Ghats beside the Kumaradhara river. It is run by the Karnataka Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department and is among the highest-earning temples in the state.
