Tradition holds that a spider (sri), a snake (kala) and an elephant (hasti) each worshipped the linga here and were granted liberation, giving the town its name. The hunter Kannappa is said to have offered his own eyes to the deity here.

History
One of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, where Shiva is worshipped as the element of air, and one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams praised in the Tevaram hymns. Parts of the temple were built under the Cholas and the Vijayanagara kings.
