Sthala Purana
Tradition holds that the sage Gautama brought the Godavari river down to earth here to atone for killing a cow by accident, and that Shiva stayed on as Trimbakeshwar. The linga has three small faces, for Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.

History
One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, near the source of the Godavari. The present black-stone temple was built in the 18th century by the Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao (Nanasaheb).
