Tradition holds that a childless woman of the Mannarasala family was blessed by the serpent king and gave birth to a son and to a five-headed serpent, who is believed to live on in the family house. Childless couples come here to pray and offer an uruli, a bronze vessel, turned upside down.

History
The temple stands in a wooded grove said to hold tens of thousands of serpent images. Its chief priestess, called Amma, comes from the Mannarasala Illam family, an unusual arrangement among Kerala temples.
