Sthala Purana

Tradition holds that Rama worshipped Shiva here after the war with Ravana. When Hanuman was slow to return with a linga from Kailash, Sita made one of sand, which is worshipped as Ramanathaswamy; the linga Hanuman brought, the Vishwalingam, is worshipped first.

History

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites. Its outer corridor is often described as the longest temple corridor in India; much of the corridor work was done under the Sethupathi rulers of Ramanathapuram in the 17th and 18th centuries.
