Sthala Purana

Tradition holds that the nine grahas, cursed for granting a sage a boon that was not theirs to give, did penance in the forest here and were released by Shiva, who then let them bless devotees from this place. Surya presides, and each of the other grahas has a shrine of its own.

History

Built in the 11th century during the reign of the Chola king Kulothunga I. It is the Surya temple of the nine Navagraha temples, and the only one of the nine where a graha is the presiding deity.
